I'm seldom taken with a character like I was with Kokopelli. Like many people who visit the Southwest I saw this hump backed flute player everywhere. Turns out his legend dates back thousands of years. What enchanted me was the idea of a man that went from town to town bringing good news. Myths included him being responsible for the changing of the seasons and fertility. He was a source of music and dancing. We sure could use some Kokopelli.
I think about Kokopelli when I see a random act of kindness, when someone holds open a door. When I see or experience something unexpectedly positive like a car dealer with a "we choose not to participate in the recession" sign. When I visit a grocery store where at least four employees say hi and ask if they can help. My friend, Denise has a tag line on her e-mail that reads "Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle". If we all give spreading good cheer focused attention – imagine even 30 minutes a day, the world will be a better place. Think Kokopelli. It can be contagious.
